ALLIGATOR CREEK NEWS 2022

The purpose of the Alligator Creek Waterway Unit MSBU is to provide for the dredging, maintenance, clearing, marking for navigational purposes, and providing for safety devices in Alligator Creek, so as to provide residents and marine interests within the unit a means of use and enjoyment of the waterways in the unit and to Charlotte Harbor.
The Alligator Creek Waterway Advisory Board meets on a quarterly basis depending on Covid. A full board is comprised of five members who are current residents of Charlotte County and currently there is a vacancy. The board represents all Charlotte County residents that have usage of Alligator Creek. With the opening of Buckley’s Pass, many boaters from Punta Gorda Isles are using Alligator creek. Please note that PGI does not have a representative on the board. If you want to help keep Alligator Creek a navigable waterway, please consider volunteering for this board. The board meetings are open meetings and citizens are encouraged to attend and give their opinions. For more information, visit the Alligator Creek Web site: HERE
There had been a problem with water depth around channel marker 10 and the problem is rectified by moving markers 9 & 10 south to put them both in deeper water.
We have an ongoing program of mangrove trimming. If you observe an area where the mangroves have grown out enough to impede line of site navigation, please report it to the contact person listed below. The county does not monitor mangrove trimming so it is up to the people that use the creek to report it.
The County does a Bathometric survey on an annual basis. This is to give a base line to show the health of the creek before hurricane season. Hurricanes do change the course of the creek and with this base line; we can prove the change is due to the hurricane thus we can make a claim to FEMA to re dredge the channel to its original permitted course. The latest survey has identified some areas that need some maintenance dredging and the county is preparing to put the dredging out on bid. If you have identified an area that you think needs dredging please let us know so we can include it on the upcoming dredging project.
